The Acorn: "Volunteers help build ‘Gordon’s House’"

The walls of “Gordon’s House” began to come together on Aug. 10 as volunteer workers from the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles and Habitat for Humanity Orange County took the next step in building a home begun as part of the youth program at General Convention.

The structure is named in honor of the late Rev. Canon Gordon Yeaton, priest of the Diocese of Los Angeles, teacher in Orange County schools, longtime activist for youth, family and community issues, and member of the board of HfHOC. Yeaton died in 2007.

At the Aug. 10 wall-raising celebration, the frames built at General Convention by youth volunteers were set into their foundation on a lot in the Orange County city of Westminster, some eight miles southwest of the Anaheim Convention Center where General Convention was held July 8 to 16.

Gordon’s House will be half of a duplex. The other half, funded by Lutheran organizations, had already been framed on the site.

Members of the Yeaton family, Episcopal clergy and laypeople, clergy of other denominations, major donor Henry T. Nicholas and the MartinezMoran family who will inhabit the house attended the event, which was conducted by Sharon Ellis, HfHOC executive director.
